China boosts wind power development

Sunday, 24 August 2008

BEIJING, Aug. 23 (Xinhua): China has concentrated on wind power development in recent years, and its installed capacity of wind power has risen from 1.26 million kW in 2005 to 605 million kW in 2007, ranking fifth in the world.

"Given the present growth rate and scale, the national wind power capacity is expected to exceed 10 million kW by the end of this year", an expert from China Electricity Council said.

China's 11th Five Year Plan, from 2005 to 2010, has set a target of building 30 large wind mills with combined installed power capacity of 10 million kW and five one million kW wind power bases.

Insiders noticed that such power generation groups as China Datang Corporation, Huadian Corporation and Huaneng Group had completed their wind power development plans to build wind mills in such wind-rich areas as Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang autonomous regions and Gansu province.

Long Yuan Electric Power Group Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of China Guodian Group, has already achieved a wind power capacity of over 2 GW, ranking sixth in the world.

It is also noticed that China's wind power development is facing such problems as blind expansion, low efficiency and inadequate equipment capacity.
