Wednesday, 13 August 2008

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua): China's net import of edible oil totaled 11.01 million tons from October 2007 to June 2008, up 21.4 per cent year on year, higher than oil consumption increase, according to China National Grain and Oils Information Center (CNGOIC).

Included were 6.13 million tons of vegetable oil and 4.88 million tons of oil yielded from 26.14 million tons of net- imported edible oil seeds, up 16.8 per cent and 27.7 per cent on a yearly basis, respectively.

China imported 6.3 million tons of vegetable oil, 860,000 tons or 15.8 per cent more than that over the same time last year. It exported 170,000 tons, down 20,000 tons or 10.5 per cent from a year earlier.

The accumulated import of edible oil seeds reached 27.17 million tons, capable of yielding 5.15 million tons of oil, up 24.7 per cent on year basis.

The export reached 1.03 million tons, capable of producing 270,000 tons of oil, down 17.4 per cent.

Meanwhile, The State Council, or the Cabinet, issued a national decree yesterday, with a series of energy- saving regulations on both fully and partly state-funded departments and organizations.

Following last week's rules on energy conservation in civilian buildings, the move came as part of the government's ambitious plan to reduce energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product by 20 per cent and major pollutant emissions by 10 per cent by 2010 from the 2005 levels.

State-funded units at or above the county levels must have offices that supervise energy use and audit energy consumption.

Reports on energy use must be made each year and handed in to the energy management offices before March 31.
