China sign MoU to set up 1,320MW power plant in Cox\\\'s Bazar

Bangladesh and People’s Republic of China (PRC) have inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a 1,320 megawatt (MW) thermal power plant in Cox’s Bazar. The MoU was signed between Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and China’s Huadian Hong Kong Company. According to the MoU, Huadian Hong Kong Co will build the coal-fired power plant at Moheshkhali upazila in the southernmost district of Cox’s Bazar within the next five years. “According to the deal Huadian will complete the coal-based power plant project by 2019,” PDB sources said. Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, power, energy and mineral resources affairs adviser to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said China will install ultra-supercritical technology at the plant to meet environment standards. Bangladesh and PRC will finance 30% of total project cost while the rest will be taken as loan from other sources. Project cost will be finalised during feasibility study. PDB Chairman Abduhu Ruhulullah and Huadian Hong Kong Co’s President Zhiao Long Jun inked the MoU on behalf their respective sides at Bidyut Bhaban in the city on Tuesday, according to a news agency.
