China still encourages AL, BNP to resolve differences

Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Li Jun has said his country still encourages Bangladesh’s major political parties to resolve their differences through peaceful dialogue for a sustained political stability. “We still encourage the two political parties (AL and BNP) to find a solution through a constructive dialogue…the two major parties shoulder a special responsibility to make the political situation in Bangladesh much more stable,” said the envoy in the city Thursday. Li Jun, however, said holding another national election depends fully on the people of Bangladesh as the January 5 polls boycotted by the main opposition party experienced low voter turnout. “I think this is an issue to be decided by the people of Bangladesh because you (BD people) know the country’s situation much better than outsiders. You’re the real players,” the Chinese diplomat said. He made the remarks during his interactions with the diplomatic correspondents at National Press Club. Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (Dcab) arranged the event – Dcab Talks – with its President Mainul Alam in the chair. Dcab General Secretary Angur Nahar Monty was present. Li Jun, however, expressed his satisfaction over the just-held upazila parishad elections and termed those local government polls ‘peaceful and positive developments’ as candidates backed by BNP and other opposition parties took part in it. Asked why China congratulated new government after the Jan 5 parliamentary polls boycotted by main opposition party and its allies, Li Jun said China follows the principle of non-interference in internal affairs. He also clarified China’s position saying they found that the elections held ‘in line with Bangladesh’s constitution’ and the ‘rule of law’ is the ‘fundamental principle’ in international relations, according to UNB.
