The Chinese government will provide a soft loan worth Tk 50 billion for setting up the proposed Shahjalal Fertiliser Factory, one of the two mega fertiliser projects, Industries Minister Dilip Barua said Monday.
"China will provide the amount as a soft loan," the minister said while briefing reporters at his secretariat office on his China visit. The minister accompanied Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during recent visit to China.
"We signed four memorandums of understanding (MoUs) during our recent visit to China to bolster cooperation in the fields of economy and technology, infrastructure and energy."
The agreements are Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement, Framework Agreement for Construction of Shahjalal Fertiliser Factory, Agreement for Construction of the 7th Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge and MoU on Bangladesh-China Cooperation in Oil and Gas sectors.
Connecting Kunming with Chittagong will strengthen regional connectivity. "We have always felt that connectivity is the key to Bangladesh's growth prospects and the Kunming initiative is an integral part of this vision," he said.
If the regional highway linking Kunming and Chittagong is be built the country's tourism sector will get a boost.
"Kunming is a Chinese province of over 40 million people, who are fond of sea beach" the minister said.
China along with India, Nepal and Bhutan could use the Chittagong Sea port, which will ultimately help increase the country's foreign earnings.
He said: "Having China a close neighbour would be of great advantage to Bangladesh."
