China to look at emission quotas, carbon trading exchange

Thursday, 2 August 2007

BEIJING, Aug 1 (AFP): China is considering setting up an emissions quota system and a carbon trading exchange in order to protect the environment and conserve energy, the central bank chief said.
"(We must) seriously study and learn from international carbon trading mechanisms and explore the possibility of setting up a pilot emissions quota system and developing an emissions quota exchange in China," central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan said.
Trade in carbon credits will give a financial incentive for companies to save energy and reduce emissions, he said in an article posted on the bank's website Tuesday.
