China and Vietnam have expressed their interest to join the Asian Clearing Union (ACU) for intra-regional trade promotion and cost effective transactions, officials said in Dhaka.
The ACU secretariat has already taken initiatives to invite both the countries to attend the next board meeting of the eight-member forum, scheduled to be held in Myanmar on May 20-21 next, as observers.
"We have already been informed about interest of the countries to join the ACU," a senior official of the Bangladesh Bank (BB) told the FE, adding that the authorities concerned have taken necessary measures in this connection.
The governor of the central bank of Bangladesh is now working as chairman of the Tehran-based forum. But the governors of the Central Bank of Myanmar and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka will take charges of chairman and vice-chairman of the ACU respectively from the next board meeting for the year 2008.
The member of Indian Ocean Rim Association for Regional Co-operation (IOR-ARC), generally known as Indian Ocean Initiative, have also showed their interest to join the union.
