Chinese firms offer to build metro rail, expressway

A Chinese company on Monday expressed its interest to construct a 35-km long metro rail from Dhaka’s Purbachal to Narayanganj’s Jhilmil residential area. China Railway Sixth group showed the interest when its seven-member delegation, led by vice-general member Zhou Heng, met Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, now in China on a six-day visit. The minister advised the Chinese company to send a proposal as per Bangladesh’s existing rules and regulation in this regard. Another Chinese company, however, offered to construct a 160-km expressway from Mirsarai in Chittagong to Cox’s Bazar. China Harbour Engineering Company Limited showed the interest when its president and CEO Lin Yichong met the Bangladesh minister at his hotel suite in China. During the meeting, the minister said the government will give priority to building a road from Mirsarai to Cox’s Bazar. This will be an expressway like marine drive. The road will help flourish the country’s tourism sector. He advised the company to send a proposal through the Planning Commission following the proper procedure, according to a news agency.
