Chittagong still faces 30 mmcfd gas shortage

Friday, 27 July 2007

The state-owned hydrocarbon and mineral resources corporation, Petrobangla, has been facing a very tough situation to meet the gas demand in Chittagong city and adjoining areas, reports UNB.
At present, gas shortage in the country's commercial capital is about 50 million cubic feet (mmcf) per day, with a daily consumption of about 255 mmcf against a demand of over 300 mmcf.
To resolve the crisis, Petrobangla has recently convened a meeting of its subsidiary companies like Bapex, GTCL, TGTDCL and BGSL. But finding no way to fully resolve the crisis, it decided to restructure the gas allocation chart with a slight increase in supply.
As per the new allocation chart, Chittagong city and adjoining areas, known as ring-main area, will get 270 mmcfd gas against the demand of 300 mmcfd.
Now Kafco will get the usual 63 mmcfd, CUFL will get 47 mmcfd against earlier 52 mmcfd while Shikalbaha power station will receive 10 mmcfd against the earlier supply of 15 mmcfd. Raozan power station will be given 70 mmcfd against the earlier 70 mmcfd, KPM to get the usual 5 mmcfd and the other consumers the usual 75 mmcfd.
Official sources said the BGSL, which is responsible for the supply of gas to the Raozan power station, proposed to shut down a unit of the power station. But the meeting rejected the proposal considering the nagging power crisis across the country.
