Army Chief General Moeen U Ahmed, whose force is backing the reformist interim regime, Tuesday requested country's voters to choose honest, capable and dynamic leaders who can lead the country into the right direction, reports UNB.

"Let us vote at a free and credible election in December 2008 to bring back the constructive democracy in the country," he told a function as special guest.

Bangladesh Election Commission organised the ceremony in celebration of successfully completion of photo voter registration at Hotel Radisson.

Chief Adviser Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed was chief guest at the function while Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda made welcome address.

Gen Moeen said many in national and international communities had estimated that preparation of voter list with photograph would need Tk 14 billion to Tk 45 billion as well as a staggering time of four to five years.

He said Bangladesh Army completed the work at Tk 4.46 billion.

He said despite strong opposition from various corners, the task was taken as a challenge and it was successfully completed by the members of the armed forces with cooperation of all sections of people.

"It is the pride for Bangladesh making such unbelievable jobs of more than 80 million-voter registration within a short span of time, what very few countries in the world achieved so far," said the army chief.
