Chronic loan-default culture
Saturday, 22 November 2014
I was happy to read in newspapers that Bangladesh Bank is planning a crackdown on chronic loan defaulters. A few corrupt loan defaulters have taken out huge money from banks and are not repaying it. This loan defaulting culture is discouraging genuine businessmen and we must stop it for good.
Idle money is lying in Banks and our economy is experiencing a lull. The central bank should be tough with chronic defaulters and allow genuine businessmen to have some breathing space so that they can borrow money and do something meaningful. Many big loan defaulters have close links with high-ups and it will be interesting to see how the central bank handles them. Strict punishment should be meted out to the offenders who have been proved habitual defaulters, so that we see an end to the loan defaulting culture.
