CHUADANGA, May 29: A bumper production of cucumber and its fair price has brought smile on the faces of the farmers in four upazilas in Chuadanga district in the current season.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said a total 230 hectares of land has been brought under cucumber cultivation in the district. Of them 50 hectares of land was brought under cultivation in Chuadanga sadar Upazila, 10 hectares in Alamdanga Upazila, 70 hectares in Damurhuda Upazila and 100 hectares in Jibannagar Upazila.
Due to favourable weather and adequate supply of agriculture input of the early stage and technical support from DAE officials a bumper production of cucumber has been achieved in the district.
The growers are happy as cucumber is being sold in the local market at Tk 25 to Tk 30 per kg while it sold at Tk 15 to Tk 20 in the last year.
Though this price is not so high farmers are expecting handsome profit than last year from the produce for bumper cucumber production.
Shahadot Hossain, a cucumber grower of village Hatikata under Chuadanga sadar Upazila said, "I cultivated cucumber on one and half bighas of land spending only Tk 12,000 this year. I expected I would get Tk 10,000 as profit but it has already exceeded my expectation."
Mr Haribula Sarkar, Deputy Director of Chuadanga DAE said the production of cucumber in the district is satisfactory and the farmers of the district would be more benefited to have good price this season. DAE field level officials have provided advice on cultivating cucumber to the growers, he added.
