Chuadanga farmers make good profit from carrot cultivation

CHUADANGA, Feb 20: Carrot cultivation is gaining popularity among the farmers in four upazilas in Chuadanga district recently as soil and weather condition are very suitable for carrot cultivation.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said a total of 520 acres of land has been brought under carrot cultivation this year in four upazilas of the district. Of them 130 acres of land has been brought under carrot cultivation in Chuadanga Sadar Upazila, 150 acres in Alamdanga Upazila, 125 acres in Damurhuda Upazila and 115 acres in Jibannagar Upazila.
The farmers of the district have cultivated high yielding carrots in their lands. Now it is being sold at Tk 22 to Tk 25 per kg in local market against Tk 15 to Tk 18 per kg last year.
Abdul Kader, a farmer of Degadah village under Chuadanga Sadar Upazila said, "I have cultivated carrot on my two bighas of land at a cost of only Tk 10,500. I have already earned Tk 21000 by selling it in the local market and I am expecting Tk 5000 more from the next produce."  
Another farmer Jumman Ali of village Kabilnagar under Alamdanga Upazila said, "I have been getting good profit through cultivating carrot on commercial basis for three years."
Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Mr Horibula Sharkar said the farmers of the district are showing great interest in cultivating carrots.
