Chunji Knit to reopen Dec 7

FE Report | Friday, 5 December 2014

The Chunji Knit agreed Thursday to reopen the unit and pay all the dues following the workers' demonstration.
Hundreds of workers of the factory demonstrated in front of the BGMEA headquarters on two consecutive days Wednesday and Thursday demanding their three months due wages and reopening of the unit.
The Chunji Knit Ltd, located at Badda, hung a notice at the main gate on December 01 stating that the unit will remain closed from December 01 to 31 and will reopen on January 01 without showing any valid reason, factory workers alleged.
They said the authority did not pay wages for the last three months-September, October and November and closed down the unit without any prior declaration, leading to the uncertainty.
Following the shut down, hundreds of Chunji workers staged demonstrations in front of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) for the last two days (Wednesday and Thursday).
Jalal Hossain, an operator of the Chunji, said, "We did not get our due wages for the last three months while the authority closed the factory for a month."
The authority did not inform anything about payment of our dues, instead they issued a notice of closure, he said.
The factory authority, in a tripartite meeting held at the BGMEA headquarters in the city, Thursday agreed to reopen the factory on December 07 and pay wages for the month of October and November on December 10 and January 10 respectively.
"The wages for September will be paid on December 22 as only 25 per cent of the month's wage remained due," BGMEA's additional secretary Md Rafiqul Islam said.
Earlier, the authority proposed to pay the wages of September, October and November in December, January and February respectively. But the workers' representatives turned down the proposal.
