CI nabs passenger with forex worth Tk 1.29m at HSIA

The Customs Intelligence (CI) nabbed on Saturday a passenger from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in the city with foreign currencies worth Tk 1.29 million.
The passenger, Rezowar Morshed Pavel was set to leave Dhaka for Bangkok around 10:00am but he was carrying huge amount of foreign currencies with him without prior declaration, according to a CI press release.
After finishing immigration formalities, the detainee was waiting at the departure lounge where a CI team asked him whether he was carrying any foreign currencies; but Mr Pavel informed CI about having less amount of money than actual.
Out of suspicion, CI searched his bags and recovered currencies including 7,615 British Pound, 3,002 US dollar, 1,900 Euros and 80 Thai Baht which are equivalent of Tk 1,291,632.
Meanwhile, checking his passport, the CI also found that the person travelled abroad 30 times in 2017 and four times in 2018.
CI will lodge cases against Pavel, who claimed to be a cloth trader, according to Customs Act, 1969 and Money Laundering Prevention Act, 2012.
