Cisco Systems Incorporate, the world leader in networking for Internet, sees Bangladesh as a fast-emerging market for Information Technology (IT) business likely to emerge as a key partner of global networking growth engine.
"Bangladesh is a fast-growing emerging market and will be among the global growth engines over the next two to three years," Sandeep Roy, Country Manager-Channels, India and SAARC, Cisco Services told the FE.
Cisco's prime focus in Bangladesh is on sectors, such as education, healthcare, banking, financial services and insurance, manufacturing and real estate, he said adding that "This would offer Cisco a good opportunity to introduce their latest and distinct networking services."
As an emerging market, these would be focus areas for the Bangladesh government in achieving the vision of 'Digital Bangladesh by 2021', Mr Roy said.
He made the observations while talking to the FE recently after his arrival in Dhaka to attend the Cisco Services CXO Roundtable Discussion in Dhaka.
Quoting a report forecast by the well-reputed 'Boston Consulting Group', Mr Roy said there will be 18.3 million internet subscribers in Bangladesh by 2020 that means approximately 32 per cent household penetration and 66 per cent business adoption.
"These provide the largest opportunity for social and economic transformation in Bangladesh and we want to be a part of this success-story," he said.
He further said most emerging countries recognise that their ability to develop and compete is directly tied to how they harness the power of Information and Communication Technolo- gies.
They recognise the need for expert assistance in taking advantage of technology. Many, including India, are already working with Cisco for the relevant know-hows and resources to transform, he explained.
"We offer Bangladesh our best services based on years of practical experience in achieving its goal of IT vanguard nation," Mr Roy said.
He said major challenges for emerging economies such as Bangladesh stem from urbanisation, large youth populations, brain drain, education systems, healthcare, environment, public safety, and global competitiveness.
"We believe that by investing in the national info-structure, an integrated network of systems and technologies will enable citizens, government, and businesses to connect on a common platform to achieve their goals," he added.
Mr Sandeep Roy put emphasis on computer education from early level of education and supportive government policies in order to gear-up a new generation with adequate base for further enhancement.
