Citi Micro-Entrepreneurship Awards launched

Citibank NA, a US based multinational bank, Thursday launched its 'Citi Micro-Entrepreneurship Awards' in the country seeking nominations from September 25.
With a vision to identify and honour best practices of micro enterprises in Bangladesh, which have been linked to a traceable source of microfinanc in the country, Citibank in coordination with the Citi Foundation introduced this award in 2005.
Wahiduddin Mahmud, chairperson of the advisory council of Citi bank NA and also chairman of Palli Karma-Shahayak Foundation (PKSF), announced the launching of 'Citi Micro-Entrepreneurship Awards' at a press conference in the city.
Abu Ahmed, professor of Dhaka University, Akbar Ali Khan, former advisor of the caretaker government, M Nurul Islam, regional senior vice president of ALICO, Mahbub Hosain and Mamun Rashid, managing director of CITI bank, among others were present at the press conference.
Mamun Rashid said the deadline for sending nomination has been set for November 8, 2007. The selection process is expected to be completed within December this year while the names of the recipients will be announced by January next year.
The award will be given under four categories that are 'Best Innovative Business of the Year', 'Best Woman Micro Entrepreneur of the Year', 'Best Micro Entrepreneur of the Year' and 'Best Microfinance Institute'.
A local NGO, Shakti Foundation, will work as the secretariat to help the entire process of selecting the nominees.
A seven-member jury board under an advisory council comprising 15 members will conduct the selection procedures.
Each of the recipients will get Tk 3 lakh as prize money.
Replying to a question, Mamun Rashid said last year they received about 1000 applications of which 600 were considered as qualified.
Answering a question, Wahiduddin Mahmud said, "We don't think that the devastating flood and eviction drive will make any bar on the selection process."
"Only 5 to 10 per cent of about 15 million micro credit receivers are engaged in business," he said answering another question.
