A group of media conscious people has launched "Citizens Forum on Media" with a view to creating a bridge between consumers and authorities of media.
They had also formed a 10-member convening committee, which was disclosed at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the city Saturday.
The demand and popularity of mass media have increased considerably since the mass upsurge of 1990. Everyday tens of millions of people read newspapers, watch television, enjoy movies and listen to radio.
"Typically media authorities never face any question or challenge on what they publish or telecast from common people. But we will work for consumers' rights on media content," said Muhammad Jahangir, convener of Citizens Forum on Media and Executive Director of Centre for Development Communication (CDC).
He said consumers have no other option but accepting the media content without throwing any challenge to the authorities concerned.
'Generally there is no channel for media consumers' feedback or opinion about media content,' he further added.
The forum will organise assessment on specific topic from electronic and print media once or twice a month. The summary of the assessment will be sent to the concerned media authorities.
They will also organise opinion survey on different issues in district level once a year.
UNESCO will provide financial assistance to the forum for the first six months to work with consumers at the primary level.
