City bus ride to become easier from Mar 22

FE Report | Sunday, 8 March 2009

Integrated Circuit (IC) cards will be introduced in at least 100 city buses from March 22 to facilitate hassle-free travelling by the commuters, bus operators told the FE.

The first ever IC card in the country will automatically adjust fares after punching the card in a device installed in the busses.

The buses of three private and one state-owned operators plying between Azimpur and Uttara, a 29 kilometres journey with 14 stoppages, will introduce the modern system.

The operators initially in the race for the new system are Dul Dul, Winner, Bevco and state-owned BRTC (Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation).

Bus operators said they would introduce the same to other important routes after successful implementation of the Azimpur-Uttara project.

"We are introducing the card system on an experimental basis under a project worth Tk 430 million," said Rezaul Karim, general secretary of City Bus Owners Association.

The commuters will have to buy the card at a cost of Tk 200, which is refundable and will be able to recharge between Tk 100 and Tk 5000 for their travelling.

Bus operators said they were introducing two types of cards - one permanent and the other temporary.

City dwellers may enjoy permanent cards while temporary cards are for those who will stay for a short span of time in the city.
