City grapples with waterlogging woes

In the wake of incessant rainfall throughout Thursday, Dhaka city struggled with severe waterlogging in multiple areas, causing widespread disruption to normal activities.
Bangladesh Meteorological Department measured 116-millimetre (mm) rainfall from 6:00 pm on Thursday to 6:00 pm on Friday, which was the second-highest in the country followed by Dimla in Nilphamari 149 mm.
The deluge gave rise to crippling traffic congestion across the city on Thursday midnight to Friday, compounding the woes of residents and commuters.
Meanwhile, certain parts of the city have witnessed a worrisome surge in accumulated rainwater levels, approaching critical thresholds.
Since the start of heavy rainfall on Thursday evening until night, several key areas have been severely affected.
Most of the city went three-to-four feet under water on Thursday night amid the severely heavy rain.
Mirpur sections 10 and 11, Shyamoli, Mohammadpur, Rayerbazar, Dhanmondi, Purana Paltan, Gulistan and parts of old Dhaka, Bangshal Road, Bijoy Sarani, Eskaton, Farmgate and Tejgaon reported substantial submergence caused by seamless downpour.
The Met office also forecast rain-thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty winds might occur at most places over Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Sylhet divisions and at many places over Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country in next one day commencing from Friday evening.
