City restaurants under surveillance of DB: Harun

FE REPORT | Tuesday, 5 March 2024

Chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid said on Monday they were keeping the capital's restaurants under constant surveillance apart from police monitoring.
Mr Harun said this while talking to the media at his Minto Road office in the city.
The DB chief warned that legal action would be taken against the restaurants that do not have the required fire safety measures.
He grieved the death of 46 people, including a daughter (who was a student of BUET) of a police official, in the devastating fire incident at the Green Cozy Cottage Shopping Mall on the capital's Bailey Road.
Mr Harun said that had the departments concerned discharged their duties properly such fire incident could have been averted.
He said that they have started working to identify the restaurants in the capital that are still running with fire incident risks, insufficient passage to get out in case of emergency and without proper ventilation arrangement.
"If any irregularities are found at the restaurants, we would inform those to the authorities concerned and will take legal action against them," he warned.
He further said if buildings are constructed following the existing building code fire incidents like those of Bangabazar, Nimtoli and Banani FR Tower will not happen.
