'CityIT 2009' fair begins Feb 26

A nine-day computer fair begins February 26 at the BCS Computer City at IDB Bhaban in the city.

Commerce Minister Faruk Khan will inaugurate the fair at 11:30 am on the day at the Computer City. State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Yafes Osman will attend the ceremony as special guest.

A total of 156 permanent shops of the largest IT market in Dhaka and 10 other non-profitable organisations will display their products and services at the 'CityIT 2009' fair to be held from February 26 to March 6 on the own premises of the Computer City.

This was disclosed at a press conference organised by BCS Computer City at the VIP Lounge of National Press Club Monday.

Mazibur Rahman Sawpon, president of the BCS Computer City, told reporters the eighth edition of the fair would display new and latest products and services and would offer opportunity to buy computer with discount price.

Products totaling over Tk 1000 million were sold last year and responses was huge, said Rahman. "We hope this year the sale will be better than that of 2008."

ASM Abdul Muktadir, general secretary of Computer City and convener of the fair, informed the number of the visitors at the last year's event was over 300,000. "The number of visitors may reach to 500,000 this year," he said.

Organisers informed discussions, cultural programme, child painting competition, blood donation programme, quiz competition and debate competition among eight universities will be held on the sideline of the fair.

The exposition will also honour seven distinguished personalities including a Language Movement veteran-Abdul Matin-and a sector commander of the Liberation War.

Conveners of the different sub-committees of the fair-Nazmul Alam Bhuiyan, Mazharul Imam Sina, Joynul Abedin Babul, Al-Mamun Khan, MH Khan Titu, AKM Mahmudul Hasan Khan, A Zaman Ejaj, Kazi Shamsuddin Lavlu, Md. Rokonur Rahman, Mahmudur Rahman Khan and Md. Shamim Hossain-were present on the occasion.

The fair will remain open from 10am to 7pm. The entry fee is Tk 10. However, the school-goers and physically-challenged will enjoy a free entry, added the organisers.

Acer, Asus, Brother, Samsung and Transcend are the sponsors and ATN Bangla, Radio Foorti and The Daily Ittefaq are the media partners of the annual fair.
