FE Report
A group of eminent citizens suggested Friday convening a 'Civil Society Taskforce' to coordinate and oversee the newly elected government's initiatives to mitigate the impact of the ongoing financial crisis and global recession.
The citizens came up with the suggestion at a meeting held at the office of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), said a press release. During the meeting, they discussed the impact of ongoing financial crisis and global recession on Bangladesh economy, and to identify actions necessary to protect the economy and the people from any adverse impact arising from the crisis.
Chairman of CPD Rehman Sobhan moderated the session that was attended, among others, by research director of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS) M Asaduzzaman, president of Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Annisul Huq, Coordinator of Nijera Kori, Khushi Kabir, former president of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Laila Rahman Kabir, chief executive officer of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) Salahuddin Ahmed Khan, Chief Economist of Bangladesh Bank Dr Mustafa K Mujeri, president of Bangladesh Employers' Federation (BEF) Kamran T Rahman, president of Bankers' Association of Bangladesh Kazi Mahmood Sattar, Director General of BIDS Dr Quazi Shahabuddin, former finance minister M Syeduzzaman and Executive Director of CPD Mustafizur Rahman.
It is expected that the newly elected government will undertake various measures to address the crisis. In view of this, it was felt that the incoming government should have at their disposal concrete recommendations and actionable agenda to address the emerging situation on a continuing basis, they said adding that the objective of this civil society exercise will be to facilitate and contribute to such initiatives.
"Taking account of the transitional state of governance we felt that it was particularly important that the incoming government should be fully briefed on the state of the economy and implications of the crisis on various sectors of the economy," they added.
"A taskforce may be convened to coordinate these initiatives to oversee the work to be undertaken in the above context. Specific responsibilities were to be shared by the CPD, BIDS, and other relevant stakeholders who will monitor the impact of the ongoing crisis and suggest appropriate policy interventions to the government," they said.
