CJ destroyed judiciary: SCBA

Tuesday, 17 May 2011

Attorney General (AG) Mahbubey Alam said outgoing Chief Justice (CJ) ABM Khairul Haque has elevated the judicial system in Bangladesh to international standards, reports bdnews24.com. At a press briefing at his office Monday, he said Justice Khairul Haque is one of the top 20 judges in the world. "Khairul Haque will be forever remembered in judicial history. We will remember him the same way the Americans recall John Marshall and the Indians VR Krishna." The AG also said those who are now critical of the CJ would realise their mistakes one day. "He has struggled throughout his life for establishing the rule of law and upholding the constitution," Alam stressed. Asked why he thought Justice Haque had declined to attend the farewell programme of the SC Bar Association (SCBA), Alam said that might have to do with the way he had been sworn in the past few days. "He probably didn't want to be further insulted while leaving." "He will remain a guiding light for us," the AG added. Meanwhile, the opposition-controlled Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president has said the outgoing CJ did everything to destroy the judiciary with his 'mild' but 'clever' moves. At a press briefing at the South Hall of the SC Monday, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain also asked Justice ABM Khairul Haque not to take over as the next caretaker government (CG) chief. Justice Haque, who retires Tuesday, will be replaced by Justice Mohammad Muzammel Hossain who was appointed on May 11. Justice Muzammel Hossain is unlikely to retire before the next caretaker government is formed. On the activities of Justice Khairul Haque, Mahbub said: "He did everything possible to destroy the judiciary. He is gentle yet a clever person.
