CJ's residence to be saved as relic

FE REPORT | Friday, 11 October 2024

The Department of Archaeology has started its proceedings to preserve the official residence of the Chief Justice (CJ) of Bangladesh as an archaeological site.
The initiative has been taken by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed with an eye to protecting the building against the backdrop of unexpected damage to it in the recent student-mass uprising.
Md Shafiqul Islam, public relations officer of the Supreme Court (SC), issued a press release to this effect on Thursday.
"If this establishment is protected under 'The Antiquities Act 1968' keeping its ownership and right of use intact in favour of the SC, it will be considered as a national asset in the public mind and future generations will be aware of the glorious history of this establishment."
To this end, the CJ on September 25 held a meeting with the SC and archaeological department officials in his official residence. Archaeologists gave assurance to take necessary initiatives to protect the building considering its importance, according to the release.
