Clashes in front of BNP office and the role of the police

Tuesday, 21 October 2014

We were sad to see that police remained silent spectators as the two rival groups of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), the student front of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), clashed and blasted crude bombs near the BNP headquarters at Naya Paltan area in the city. The clashes over the newly-formed central committee of the JCD left at least 10 persons injured. We saw in the TV footage how an injured person was crawling, but there was nobody to help him and take him to the hospital. It was indeed a touching scene. The faction deprived of a position in the new committee locked horns with those who got posts. Situation could have been worse as the senior leaders of the party were confined inside after the deprived faction locked the main entrance of the BNP office.
Whatever is the reason of the clashes or who were involved is a different thing to ponder about. It is the duty of the law enforcement agencies to immediately intervene in any situation that affects law and order. It is not acceptable that the police remain silent spectators while people hurl bombs and clash with lethal weapons in broad daylight leaving many injured while. Is it not the responsibility of the police to protect the lives and properties of all the citizens? Why did the police not intervene and stop the clashes? Did they wait for further worsening of the situation? We disapprove of this role of the law enforcement agencies.
