Classified loans rise by Tk 12.34b in six months

The amount of classified loans increased by Tk 12.34 billion in the last six months to September 2008 due to poor loan recovery performance of some of the commercial banks during the period.
The amount of non-performing loans (NPL) reached Tk 250.72 billion as on September 30, 2008. The amount was Tk 238.38 billion six months back, according to the central bank statistics.
During the last six months, the share of classified loans of the total outstanding loans of the country's banking system declined by a mere 0.14 percentage point.
The share of the classified loans in the total outstanding loans was 12.34 per cent on September 30, 2008. The share was 13.15 per cent in Mach last.
During the period, the total amount of default loans with four state-owned commercial banks (SCBs) rose to Tk 143.43 billion from Tk 142.12 billion as on March 31.
On the other hand, the total amount of classified loans with the private commercial banks (PCBs) reached Tk 67.16 billion from Tk 57.46 billion during the period, the data revealed.
The classified loans of nine foreign banks (FBs) stood at Tk 2.49 billion in September 2008 against Tk 2.27 billion in March this year.
The default loans with five development financing institutions (DFIs) rose to Tk 37.61 billion during the period under review from Tk 36.52 billion.
