Climate change fund

Thursday, 12 June 2008

IT is praiseworthy that the government has proposed to create a fund to face the climate-change effects on the country. It is proposing to allot Tk 3000 million in the next fiscal year for the purpose. The government faced problems in meeting the post-disaster situations in the outgoing fiscal year. The floods and cyclone Sidr, caused by climate change, put a great economic burden on the country. It caused loss of many lives and much of valuable properties.

So we need special allotment to meet the aftermaths of natural calamities. A vast number of coastal population will need rehabilitation as climate change is likely to submerge 18 per cent of land of the country, in the coastal areas. As Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries, our need for this fund is the highest. We have not only to support the effected people but also need to undertake research to fix our strategy to mitigate the adverse impact of climate change on our population.
