Climate change may affect achievement on poverty reduction: President

President Professor Dr Iajuddin Ahmed has said the significant achievement on poverty reduction and improvement of human development during the last few decades may be challenged by climate change and other associated disasters, reports UNB.
Iajuddin Ahmed was speaking at a seminar in New Orleans, Louisiana, Monday, according to report received here Tuesday.
Touching on the strategies pursued by the government to address these challenges, President Iajuddin said the poverty reduction strategy paper had taken into account aspects like environmental health, energy, agriculture, natural resources, climate change and disaster management.
Earlier, the President had interactions with the senior scientists from the United States who came to join the centennial celebration of Agronomy Society of America in New Orleans.
He also joined the Golden Opportunity scholars, who are the top young talents in the field of agriculture in the United States, at a roundtable discussion.
President's spouse Dr Anwara Begum also joined the discussion.
President Iajuddin attended the award giving ceremony of the Soil Science Society of America and distributed awards among the scholars and scientists of the United States.
Mayor of the city of New Orleans Ray C Nagin paid a courtesy call on the President at his hotel suite and presented him with the key to the city.
The mayor also handed over to the President a proclamation declaring the day as Bangladesh Day in New Orleans.
The President invited the Mayor to visit Bangladesh with a view to studying the success of disaster Management Strategies put in place in Bangladesh to deal with natural disaster.
Bangladesh Ambassador to USA Humayan Kabir, DG of Special Security Forces Maj Gen Sheikh Md Monirul Islam and President's Secretary Sirajul Islam attended the meetings.
