The clocks in the country will go back by one hour at just one minute to midnight Thursday, marking the end of summertime.
At 11:59pm this midnight, the time in Bangladesh will revert to 10:59pm, meaning 31st night revellers will have to wait one more hour before joining the New Year celebration. But it will allow many others to spend more time in bed.
The move from Bangladesh Standard Time to Daylight Saving Time (DST) has been credited with saving up to 300 megawatt of electricity in the national grid since its introduction in June this year.
On June 19, the government in the face of severe load-shedding during the peak hours pushed the clock one hour forward banking on the rationale that moving the clocks would mean sun-lit evenings and a reduction in demand for scarce electricity.
But the new time, the first in the country's history, has been drawing criticism for the last couple of weeks after the current winter set in. It was prompted by the fact that due to fog the day does not see the light of the sun until the clocks strike 8am.
