Closed RMG units reopen today

FE Report All the 10 closed garment factories at Ashulia, which were kept shut following labour unrests, will resume production today (Thursday). The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the leaders of the apparel sector with ministers for home affairs, shipping and labour at the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) office in the city Wednesday. The meeting was told that an announcement on formation of a new wager board for garment workers would be made today (Thursday) while the gazette notification on it would also be published within a week. During the meeting the home minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir assured the apparel makers of providing necessary security in the Ashulia apparel manufacturing zone. He also said industrial police had been empowered to enter any garment factory building on the security ground without taking prior permission from the factory owners. At the meeting the shipping minister Shajahan Khan urged the garment factory owners to provide dearness allowance (DA) to their workers.
