Closure of Amar Desh, arrest of its acting editor protested

Saturday, 5 June 2010

President of the International Commonwealth Journalists' Association Hassan Shahriar voiced concern over the chain of events that led to the cancellation of the declaration of daily Amar Desh and the arrest of its acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman on fraud charges.
Such actions, Shahriar said in a statement Friday, contradict Bangladesh government's pledge to uphold freedom of press and protect journalists from harassment.
The government should resist itself from doing anything that may be perceived to have undermined the principles of free press and free expression.
He expressed sympathy and solidarity with the journalists of Amar Desh, who have been rendered jobless because of its closure.
Shahriar expressed his hope that the government would soon move to restore the publication of the daily and jobs for its journalists and others.
