Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) has identified 330 individuals as "miscreants" and imposed restrictions on their entry and presence within the city.
The list includes former education minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, ex-city mayor AJM Nasir, and different leaders of the Awami League, BNP, and their allied organisations, reports bdnews24.com.
Also named is Chinmoy Krishna Das, who remained behind bars on charges of sedition. CMP issued the directive in a notice on Saturday afternoon. It was signed by Police Commissioner Habib Aziz.
According to the notice, under Sections 40, 41, and 43 of the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Ordinance 1978, the CMP has the authority to remove individuals whose organised presence poses a threat, spreads fear, or is associated with illegal activities.
The order stipulates that any violators will face appropriate legal action.
Showkat Azam Khaja, joint convenor of Chattogram city unit of BNP, described his inclusion as "embarrassing" and told bdnews24.com: "12 names from the BNP, including members of the Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, are on the list.
"We do not understand why our names are included. Our leaders will meet the commissioner tomorrow to clarify the criteria used."
PROMINENT NAMES
Notable figures include ex-mayor Nasir (No. 180), former MP ABM Fazle Karim (187), former education minister Nowfel (188), Chattogram city Awami League President Mahtab Uddin Chowdhury (239), and Fazle Karim's son Faraz Karim Chowdhury (240). Chinmoy appears at No. 241.
INCLUSION OF DEAD
The list even names dead people, including Ataullah Chowdhury, a former councillor of Ward 30, who passed away in November (No. 227).
When asked about including political leaders alongside alleged criminals, Commissioner Habib told bdnews24.com: "I do not recognise political parties under CRPC. I recognise criminals. Those named are listed as 'miscreants' by the police."
