Coal-based power generation in N region urged

FE Report
Speakers at a seminar Wednesday demanded coal-based power generation and industrialisation in the region and 50 percent subsidy on fuel to help their industries compete with those running on gas.
Gas is not available in most of the districts of the region and on the other hand, furnace oil and diesel are costlier than gas, which has forced industrialisation to stand still here, speakers said at the seminar on "development of North Bengal and National Budget" organised by North Bengal Development Forum in the city.
Planning Minister A.K Khandoker spoke as the chief guest while HT Imam, advisor to the Prime Minister, was the special guest.
The seminar said the country is rich in the coal resource, about 3 billion tonnes in five coalmines discovered so far at Barapukuria, Phulbari, Jamalganj, Khalsapir and Dighipara.
The deposits are equivalent to 65 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas, enough to ensure the country's energy security in both medium and long terms.
Shahariar Alam MP was the convener of the seminar, coordinated by Molla Amzad Hossain, Editor of the Energy & Power magazine.
