GOPALGANJ, Oct 19: A cockle is not less than a pear has been proved by Ratna Rani Sarker (30), a cockle business woman of village South Jalirpar under Muksudpur Upazila in Gopalganj district.
Self-employed Ratna Rani Sarker made her life free from poverty through her cockle-made ornaments business. She has established such an ornaments factory with the cooperation of her husband Govinda Sarker.
It is learnt that she started work on cockles from her minor age with a vision. She always looked for a pearl from cockles and finally got engaged with this business, though she didn't get any pearl from cockle yet.
She started this business with only Tk. 2000 invested by her husband after marriage. Various designed of ornaments such as necklaces, hair-clips, hair-bands etc. made of cockle are being produced in her factory.
To run her factory and establish her business husband Govinda Sarker has taken the best part. Govinda said he collects the cockles from different ponds and lake areas. He also collects cockles from gypsy women from Dhaka, who also collect those from different pearl cultivation farms.
Not only that, he sometimes directly goes to Dhaka, Chittagong, Comilla to collect those cockles. He buys those by Tk. 50 per 100 pieces.
Ratna Sarker said that after collecting the cockles to make ornaments she has to take help of 5 workers. Every worker gets Tk. 25 per 100 pairs. In a day a worker could resize a minimum of 500 pairs of cockles.
She said that she has to spent Tk. 650 to Tk. 700 to make 500 pairs of ornaments and could earn a profit of Tk. 14,000 to Tk. 15,000 a month through this business.
She sells these ornaments in different markets such as local markets, house of Michael Madhusudan Datta at Sagardari, house of Rabindra Nath Tagore at Shilaidaha, picnic spot "Niribili" at Narail, sea-beach at Kuakata and Cox's Bazar etc. and at different trade-fairs.
Now 25 families of the village, encouraged by her cockle business, are engaged in this business to establish themselves.
Ratna Rani Sarker urged on the Government to help them so that they could keep their business going. She hopes that if she gets any bank loan with easy installment then she could reform her factory and increase productions and the government could earn foreign currency by exporting these cockle-made ornaments goods.
