GOPALGANJ, Nov 25: "A cockle is no less than a pearl" has been proved by Ratna Rani Sarker (30), a cockle (jhinuk) businessperson of village South Jalirpar under Muksudpur Upazila in Gopalganj district.
Ratna Rani Sarker could made her self rise above poverty and become self-employed by selling cockle-made ornaments. She has established a cockle-made ornaments factory with her husband Govinda Sarker's cooperation.
She started this business with only Tk 1000. Her husband after marriage encouraged her to go into this business because of poverty in their family. Ornaments of various designs such as necklace, hair-clips, hair-bands etc. were being made with cockle shells in her factory.
Husband Govinda Sarker has taken the best part in running her factory and establish her business. Govinda Sarker said that he collected the cockles from different ponds and beels in the area. He also collected these cockles from gypsy women from Dhaka, who also collected those from different pearl cultivation farms.
Not only that, he sometimes directly goes to Dhaka, Chittagong Comilla to collect those cockles. He buys those at Tk 25 per 100 pieces.
Ratna Sarker said that after collecting the cockles she had to take help of five workers to make those into ornaments step by step. Every worker gets Tk 20 per 100 pairs to resize the cockles. In a day the worker could resize minimum 500 pairs of cockles.
She said that she had to spend Tk 650 to Tk 700 to make 500 pairs of ornaments and she could earn a profit of Tk 14,000 to Tk 15,000 in a month by doing this business.
Ratna Rani Sarker urged the Government to keep such business under its patronisation. She said that if she got bank loans on easy terms she would rebuild her factory and increase her business with more attractive products and the government could earn foreign currency by exporting these cockle-made ornaments abroad.
