Sunday, 5 April 2015

A three-day numismatic exhibition began on Saturday in the city to showcase the coins and currency notes, which were issued over the centuries and reflected the history, civilisation and prosperity of this country, reports BSS.
"This is a creative initiative," said cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor, while inaugurating the flagship event of the country's coins and paper notes collectors at the conference room of GPO.
The minister said the hobbies like the one of coin collections help people step in the big horizon of knowledge while keep them away from unethical thinking and practices.
He advised arranging such exhibition at primary and intermediate schools so the children can be encouraged to do creating tasks besides knowing the history of civilisation.
State minister for women and children affairs Meher Afroz Chumki and additional director general of Bangladesh Post Office Prabhash Chandra Saha, among others, attended the inaugural function.
A total of 26 collectors have put on display their careful collections of historical coins when an area of the exhibition has been dedicated to the special display under the title - "Bangabandhu in the banknotes of Bangladesh".
The exhibition is showcasing a wide array of coins ranging from pre-historic ages to British, Pakistani periods and independent Bangladesh. The famous copper coins of independent kingdom of Bengal Sultanate are being demonstrating along with many other copper coins in a section marked as "the copper coins of Indian subcontinent".
There are also coins in various colours and dimensions those were developed and issued during ancient Bengal and by Maurya dynasty in Gandhara civilisation.
The visitors to the exhibition would also be enthralled with knowing the history and civilisation of Asia, Europe, Africa, Greece and Indian sub-continent, reflected in the collections of coins of Abbasid caliphate, Mamluk Sultanate, and Harikela, a kingdom in ancient Bengal.
Apart from the antique coins, commemorating coins, bank notes, gold and silver coins, issued by Bangladesh Bank (BB) for different occasions, are also placed on the display.
Bangladesh Numismatic Society organised the exhibition, which will remain open to public from 10 am to 5 pm till Tuesday.
