NARSINGDI, July 2 (BSS): Cultivation of Colombo lemon has gained popularity among the cultivators in the district due to its economic prospect.
A number of farmers had started small scale cultivation of the lemon few years back on experimental basis in four upazilas of the district and achieved remarkable success.
Their success encouraged many others to cultivate and raise orchards of the juicy and extraordinary flavour fruit.
Seeing the interest of the farmers, the Department Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken a programme to cultivate export quality lemon in four upazilas - Shibpur, Belabo, Monohardi and Raipura of the district.
Under the programme a total of 50 new orchards of Colombo lemon are being set up in the four upazilas. Each orchard is spread on one bigha of land.
The department supplied 160 saplings of Colombo lemon to each grower and all the growers were imparted training on producing quality lemon.
Besides, some farmers in different areas of the district raised a number of orchards on their own initiative and they are at present harvesting good quality lemon in their orchards.
At present, farmers in four upazilas are cultivating Colombo lemon in 1,180 orchards and they have produced over 7,200 tonnes of lemon in the district.
