Review of power, energy deals

Committee seeks to hire int'l firms to assist it

FE REPORT | Monday, 25 November 2024

The National Review Committee on the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources has recommended the government to hire reputed legal and investigation firms to assist its review of major power generation contracts signed during ousted Sheikh Hasina's regime from 2009 to 2024.
Led by Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury, the committee said in an extraordinary resolution adopted Sunday that it needed more time to do further analysis of other solicited and unsolicited contracts, said a spokesperson at the CA office.
The committee is collecting evidence that may lead to potential renegotiation or cancellation of contracts in line with the international arbitration laws and proceedings.
The contracts currently under detailed investigation include Adani (Godda) BIFPCL 1234.4 megawatt coal power plant, Payra 1320 MW coal power plant, Meghnaghat 335 MW dual-fuel power plant, Ashuganj 195 MW gas-based power plant, Bashkhali 612 MW coal power plant, Meghnaghat 583 MW dual-fuel power plant and Meghnaghat 584 MW gas/RLNG power plant.
"To facilitate this (review of deals), we recommend immediate engagement of one or more top-quality international legal and investigation firms to assist our committee," the review committee said in its resolution.
It further stressed on ensuring that the investigations are of international standards and will be acceptable to international negotiations and arbitration.
