Common model needed to face challenges of rising sea levels

Chairman of Intergovern-mental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) RK Pachauri said Saturday there is need for concerted effort to combat the challenges of fast deterioration of climate changes.
IPCC chairman was addressing a plenary on the next fifteen years - the way forward at the concluding session of the two day long International Business Conference in the city organised by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry in celebration of its 50 years.
President of International Chamber of Commerce Mahbubur Rahman was moderator in the programme.
"We need a common model to face the challenges of rising sea level and other changes in the climate to have a sustainable environment," said Pachauri who won Noble prize in 2007 for his contribution to the climate changes.
He also said Dhaka, Kolkata and other nearby cities are very vulnerable to the climate changes, especially in terms of rising sea level and there is also need for open minds and open boundaries to work together.
"We can set an example to the rest of the world to work under a common model to face the challenges of the climate changes being poor nations of the earth," IPCC, an organisation set up by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), chief said.
Quoting statistics, IPCC chairman said there will be serious impact of climate changes on agriculture, human health and eco system adding "…food security to suffer further due to the climate changes."
He also said south Asia in particular is very vulnerable to the impacts of climate changes, which requires cooperation and coordination at an unprecedented level to ensure that common resources are protected and measures are taken efficiently to protect the people, property and ecosystem.
"Business and industry have special role in not only using their resource for adopting to their impacts of climate changes but also adopting technologies and methods for bringing about structural changes which are part of a large strategy for sustainable development," he added.
Annisul Huq, president of FBCCI however stressed the need for proper political stability to face the emerging challenges in Bangladesh.
He also said: "We are also concern on the fast deteriorating of climate changes."
Addressing the plenary, Daily Star Editor Mahfuz Anam said Bangladesh needs investment in science and technology sector.
"It is very discouraging for us that the budgetary allocation for the science is dwindling fast," he added.
He said this is the science which can teach us to cope with the changing situation.
International Trade Centre (ITC) executive director Patricia Francis, Karthik Siva of global brand Forum also addressed at the programme.
