CHITTAGONG, Sep 2: Although consumers are fighting with price spiral of essential commodities they are careful and choosy about iftar items of quality and purity.
Not only the well-off buyers but the commoners too are favouring the brand items of special bakers, primarily to avoid adulterated foods and secondly because of their change in taste during the special occasion of Ramadan.
While visiting some iftar markets in the city it was seen that some specialized bakers have added new items to their menu.
The items which are drawing the consumers most are jilipi of Highway Sweets, halim and kabab of Peninsula, vegetable tempura, chicken potato and shami kabab of Maridian, beaf biriani of Well Food, halim and samucha of Royal Bangla Sweets.
Apart from selected items the consumers are prone to 'uncommon' items for which they traveled miles for the same.
Some customers from Agrabad thronged Pitstop at Lalkhan Bazar, four miles away, for vegetable kakura and Arabic chicken.
There is no particular market of special iftar items in Chittagong like the one at Chawkbazar in Dhaka. That is why people of Chittagong go for some items to one shop and for other items to another.
"This is a special occasion for enjoying iftars with members of the family after fasting for the whole day. We cannot compromise with it, no matter what the price is," said Anwarul Huq, a primary school teacher at Bakalia in the city.
Manager of Highway Sweets at Jamal Khan said, "Consumers have become more health-conscious now-a-days. That is one major reason why people of all classes are running after brands of their choice."
