Communication snapped as bailey bridge collapses in Netrakona

NETRAKONA, Nov 11 (UNB): Road communication between the district, Sunamganj and other parts of the country remained snapped as a bailey bridge over Dhanaikhali River in Sadar Upazila collapsed Tuesday early morning.
Road communication between Sadar, Kolmakanda, Mohonganj, Barhatta and
Durgapur Upazilas of this district and five other upazilas of Sunamganj and rest of country remained suspended as the bridge is yet to be operational.
The incident took place at about 6am while two sugar and rod-laden trucks were crossing the bridge. Drivers and helpers of two vehicles fled away leaving behind their vehicles, which were later seized.
However, there was no report of any casualty in the incident.
Abul Kalam, sub-assistant engineer of Roads and Highways department
and also supervisor of the bridge, said that work order for repairing the bridge was given four months back, but the contractor did not start the work.
The government in 1993 constructed the bridge at a cost of Tk 19.7 million sat Thakurakona union for easier communication for the people of eastern region.
