‘Community support needed to eradicate drug abuses’

RAJSHAHI, July 16 (BSS): Full support of the community can be the crucial means of eradicating the abuse of drugs along with its illicit trafficking and trading.
Forging social resistance against the abuse of drugs is also important to protect the young generation, particularly the students, from drug-addiction.
Concerted efforts of all the government and non-government entities concerned and the community has become an urgent need to ensure a drug abuse free society to attain the cherished goal.
Police officials and public representatives came up with the observation while addressing a community level workshop on relation between police and people at the conference hall of Mozahar Hossain Women Degree College under Bagha upazila in the district on Sunday.
Superintendent of Police (SP) ABM Masud Hossain addressed the meeting as chief guest with Officer-in-Charge of Bagha Police Station Khairul Islam in the chair.
Additional Superintendents of Police Sanatan Chakraverty and KHM Ershad, Assistant Superin-tendent of Police Abu Zahid, Upazila Chairman Advocate Layeb Uddin, Programme Manager of the Asia Foundation Safiul Awal and Bagha Pourashava Mayor Akkash Ali also spoke on the occasion.
On behalf of its 'Relation between police and people' project, the Asia Foundation organised the meeting supported by the district police.
SP Masud Hossain said all the local government institutions side by side with the public and private bodies should come forward and work together to attain the optimum result in this regard as the drug-abuse is gradually aggravating.
He said the present government has a declaration of zero tolerance against drug-addiction and urged all quarters to come forward to protect the young generation from the grip of social crime.
"We have to build a healthy society to achieve the sustainable development goals," he said, adding the movement against drug abuse should be turned into a social movement.
Upazila Chairman Advocate Layeb Uddin said adequate support of the public in general and leaders of influences can be the effective means of freeing the society from the abuse of drugs along with its illicit trade and trafficking.
Creation of mass-awareness about the curse of drug-abuses coupled with its fatal consequences has become crucial to mitigate the social disease.
