Composition of investigation agency on war crime to be expanded

Monday, 27 April 2009

Home Minister Sahara Khatun said Sunday composition of the investigation agency on War Crime would be expanded for a thorough inquiry and proper trial of the war criminals.
The home minister made the comment talking to reporters at the home ministry, without specifying when the investigation panel would be constituted.
The home minister said they would sit in an inter-ministerial meeting within two or three days to finalise the matter of formation of the agency, reports UNB.
"As the offences were committed at different places across the country, it will not be correct to investigate the matter constituting the committee with three or five members," she said.
"That's why we are thinking about increasing the number of members of the investigating agency," she added.
Earlier on April 9, the government started the pre-trial process for putting to trial the 1971 war criminals, a key election pledge of the present government.
The trial would be conducted under the International Crime Tribunals Act 1973.
Bangladeshi nationals who were involved in killing, rape, arson and looting directly or as auxiliary force with the Pakistani occupation army during the liberation war will be brought to trial, as decided by the new Awami League government.
