Compost fertilizer changes Karim's fate

MEHERPUR, Nov 4: Land less Abdul Karim living in Raghunathpur 'Asroyon Project' in Meherpur Sadar has been producing compost fertilizer using earthworm. It has made him a millionaire within 9 months. The local farmers are his beneficiaries using the compost produced by him. Being inspired, the farmers are using the compost instead of chemical fertilizer.
Investigating on the spot we found Abdul Karim with his wife busy to collect the compost. He disclosed that he collected five thousand selected earthworms from Nagordip at Shantipur in Nodia district of India. Every earthworm cost him Tk. 2. There are now three lakhs Earthworms from five thousand he bred. About 150 kg. compost fertilizers are produced in the firm every month. During last nine months he has produced one metric ton compost fertilizer. He pours cow dung in the drum of compost project. The earthworms eat the cow dung and pass stool which turn into compost fertilizer. The local farmers buy the compost at a cheaper rate than urea. The farmers are happy to use compost fertilizer as they are getting desirable amount of crops.
Abdul Karim said that his aim is to make a bigger compost factory. A local farmer, Kowsar Ali informs that he has used the compost and has got more crops. He also uses the compost for producing vegetables.
Md. Moniruzzaman, Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension says that there are 12 thousands species of earthworms. In them only ten species live on dirt. In ten species of earthworms, the Epizic species is cow dung eater. The stool of cow dung eater earthworm is used as a compost fertilizer. When the chemical fertilizer reduced the production power of soil, the compost fertilizer makes the soil fertile.
