Comprehensive steps stressed to end domestic violence

RANGPUR, May 25 (BSS): Speakers at a daylong views-exchange meeting here have stressed on comprehensive efforts at family, society and state levels to end domestic violence against women for building a happier nation. They urged for showing cooperative attitude among the family members and respect the womenfolk for ensuring their honour, dignity and security and mainstreaming them in attaining sustainable national development and building a more civilized society. They were addressing the views-exchange meeting on 'Domestic Violence (Prevention and Security) Act 2010' organised by Nagorik Uddog Tuesday at Raja Ram Mohan Roy auditorium in the town. Additional District magistrate of Rangpur Dr Muhammad Mossarraf Hossain attended the meeting as the chief guest with President of district unit of Human Rights Watch Group Arab Ali Bablu in the chair. President of Rangpur unit of Bangladesh Mohila Parishad Marhamatun Nesa, human rights activists Shaheen Rahman, Akbar Ali, Monwar Hossain, Abu Taleb, Programme Manager of Nari Adhikar Unit of RDRS Bangladesh Mesbahun Nahar, addressed as the special guests. Programme Officer of Nagorik Uddog Marjina Akhter presented the keynote paper elaborately narrating the past and present situations on repression and violence against women and achievements in the fields of improving the situations now. Rangpur Area Manger of Nagorik Uddog Mamun Ar Rashid moderated the meeting participated by government and NGO officials, lawyers, socio-cultural and human rights activists, women community leaders, professionals, public representatives and elite. Narrating various types of violence against women, the speakers said that the women are being subjected to tortures and abuses in every family and all working places due to lack of adequate social awareness and cooperative attitudes. They expressed their renewed pledge to play pioneering roles in building mass awareness for preventing all sorts of violence against women for ensuring equal women's rights, eradicate gender discriminations and their participation at all levels.
