Friday, 19 December 2008

Chief Adviser (CA) Dr Fakhruddin Ahmed Thursday said it is urgent to take concerted steps to increase milk production in the country, reports BSS.
He said that the government was continuing its efforts to unite milk producers and interested farmers through cooperatives to raise milk production for improving their socio-economic condition.
The CA said this while addressing a function on the occasion of the '35th founding anniversary of Milk Vita (Bangladesh Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Limited)' and 'white revaluation on milk production in Bangladesh' at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the city.
He said the country is importing milk and milk products worth about Tk 10 billion (1,000 crore) from abroad every year.
Referring to huge skilled manpower in the country, Dr Fakhruddin said, "We can achieve self-reliance in milk production by utilising this manpower."
He said at present the Milk Vita is working at 105 upazilas of 26 districts of the country. About 200,000 cooperative farmers are directly involved in the Milk Vita and the number of direct beneficiaries is 1.0 million.
The CA said, "There were some irregularities and indiscipline in the Milk Vita like many other organisations in the country. We have removed those. As a result, the organisation has become a profitable one."
He requested the authorities and cooperative farmers to work together to spread the cooperative-based activities of the Milk Vita at every village of the country.
Dr Fakhruddin also requested other milk processing factories set up by private initiatives to gear up their activities.
The CA expressed firm belief that the government will always be beside them on the issue.
LGRD and Cooperatives Adviser Mohammad Anwarul Iqbal, Secretary of Rural Development and Cooperatives Division ATM Fazlul Karim and Chairman of Milk Vita Union Mohammad Hasibur Rahman, among others, addressed the function.
Advisers, special assistants to the Chief Adviser and senior government officials, among others, were present at the function.
Dr Mohammad Shamsuddin made a power-point presentation on 'White revaluation on milk production in Bangladesh' at the function.
Later, the Chief Adviser handed over awards among four milk cooperatives of Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions for supplying highest quantum of milk.
