Concrete blocks to save $23.35m a year

A delegation of Bangladesh Concrete Products and Block Manufacturers Association led by its President and Chairman of Concord Group SM Kamaluddin called on Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith at the conference room of the ministry recently.
The president of the association highlighted the usefulness and necessity of the multiple-use of concrete products and concrete blocks, says a press release.
The major benefits of constructing building with concrete blocks are- since it is produced only with cement, sand and pebbles in a mechanised way there is no need of using ground soil. As it does not require any fuel for being baked, there is no carbon emission or wastes.
Cost of electricity per piece is merely Tk 0.20. Use of concrete blocks in building construction reduces the weight of the establishments up to 50 per cent and as reinforcement, its utility to cope with earthquake is more while threat of damage is less.
Concrete blocks will lessen the need of 6.73 million bags of cement a year in the construction sector of the country, which will save an amount of $ 23.35 million.
While air borne particle is normally 120 ng/m3 in air, it is about 463 ng/m3 in Bangladesh, a major cause of which is the emission of smokes from the brick kilns.
The minister gave a patient hearing to the deliberation of the association and affirmed them of undertaking necessary measure in this regard.
Senior Vice President Md Israfil Atique, Vice President (finance) Fakhrul Abedin and Director Nuruzzaman of the association attended, among others, the meeting.
