Conducting the drive with delicacy and accuracy

Wednesday, 15 August 2007

GENERALLY, businesses across the country have wholeheartedly welcomed the activities of the reconstituted caretaker government in taking a tough stand against all kinds of unethical, harmful and corrupt behaviour. It is also true that businesses who are engaged in their occupation with scrupulousness and the public welfare in mind, have nothing to fear from the current operations of the security forces.
But there is also a point that many genuine importers of essential commodities may have been scared by the arrests and harassments of some of them. This may have led them to go slow in carrying out their import activities for a while. But this lull in their operations can be extremely risky for the consumption sectors of the economy as a whole. If this trend keeps on, then fairly soon shortages of essential goods may actually take place and the same would create a justification for raising their prices to the detriment of consumers.
Thus, it is important to restore the confidence of the genuine business houses that they fear nothing from the operation of the security forces. The drive by the latter must be conducted with enough delicacy and accuracy to ensure such a restoration of confidence among businesses involved with imports.
