The United Kingdom (UK), in collaboration with the government of Bangladesh, will hold a major conference on global climate change at Sheraton Hotel today (Tuesday).
Foreign Affairs Adviser Dr Iftekhar Ahmed Choudlury will open the day-long conference which will focus on international leadership, said a UK High Commission press release.
Finance Adviser Dr AB Mirza Md Azizu Islam will chair a high-level panel discussion on how to finance adaptation measures.
The conference will conclude with remarks from the Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on Environment and Forests, Raja Devasish Roy.
Sessions on approaches to building the country's capacity to adapt to climate change and examples of best practice from Bangladesh will be held during the conference.
The conference, arranged jointly by the British High Commission and DFID-Bangladesh, will bring together top-level representatives from different government ministries, climate change experts, the media and heads of donor organisations.
It will serve as a stepping stone to the high-profile international event on climate change effects in Bangladesh, to be held in London in May 2008.British High Commissioner Anwar Chowdhury said, "Climate change has become a very prominent feature of the UK's engagement with Bangladesh.
This is a timely event. We are committed to putting developing countries at the heart of the world's response to climate change. We see the compelling case for action in Bangladesh. And, as a pioneer of adaptation measures, Bangladesh can be a beacon for others."
The UK's DFID Country Representative, Chris Austin, who will also speak at the event, said, "Climate Change is an issue for us all us to tackle together - it is not just an environmental issue, it is a developmental one- perhaps the most critical long-term challenge that Bangladesh faces".
